During the war I lived at Wivelsfield Green. I can remember my father building a custom built air raid shelter inside the house and I have memories of us all piling into the shelter, including my Gran, my mother, two evacuee girls and my two brothers.

To raise money for the Red Cross, my friend and I organised a raffle, the prizes were a pair of gloves (knitted by my friend) and half a dozen eggs provided by our chickens. The raffle raised one pound six shillings (拢1 . 6 . 0) for which we each received a receipt from the Red Cross and a personal letter from Winston Chuchill's wife, Clementine, written and signed in her own hand. (I have included a copy of Clementine's letter to me.)

I can recall the building of an airstrip between Plumpton and Wivelsfield Green, used mainly for Spitfires piloted by Polish airmen serving with the Royal Air Force. The building of the airstrip required the Plough Inn public house to be moved further down the road towards Plumpton to a position in which it can be found today.
