I must have been about 8 years old. It was a lovely summer鈥檚 afternoon and I was walking amongst a patch of tall horse daisies in the field opposite the house where I lived, here in Sussex.

All around seemed so calm 鈥� then all at once a neighbour and my mother started shouting 鈥淪tay where you are, get down and keep still鈥�. I crouched down.

Up in the sky a low flying German aeroplane was approaching the field. The air-raid warning had not gone off!

A shower of bullets fell all around me, but thank goodness none hit me.
