The bombing raid of Coventry has been etched in my memory for over 60 years. Although very tragic it was a most wonderful sight. A beautiful moonlit night, the search lights were criss-crossing each other, the German planes high in the sky picked out by the moonlight and there in the far distace a huge red glow reminding me as a child of a bonfire and fireworks display. I was only very young and l just stood at the entrance of our public shelter and watched in awe the dreadful bombing of coventry. It was too far away for Birmingham to be affected directly but that memory has stayed with me all my life.
We had no sirens near where l lived so knowing no better l started out for school after dinner break wondering where my friends were. Suddenly l heard a plane coming, very low! It was a German plane which had been shot down, it was so low l could see the pilot sitting in the front waiting to crash. I wonder was he killed? Within a few days we had a siren very near our house but l shall always remember that pilot.
On a lighter note the following is one of my favourites. Another night there was a very long raid on Birmingham and the suburb where l lived was a very good target although luckily they missed the inportant factories G.E.C and I.C.I. We had a few shops around the corner one in particular a grocers where the produce was displayed on the counter. The bombs came down and one went straight through the roof of the grocers and landed in a huge slab of butter!! Fortunately it did not explode as the man who worked there was asleep upstairs!!
I do remember being evacuated as a child. We had ahd a 15 hour raid on Birmingham one night. Mainly l was on my own in the shelter as my Mother waited for my Father to return from work. I was not scared but after that l was evacuated to North Derbyshire near Sheffield. However The Germans followed as 3 weeks later Sheffield was flattened!!

I do hope you enjoy these memories. Thank you for reading them and thank you 麻豆官网首页入口 for the opportunity to share them. Pat Bishop
