I lived in Old Trafford, Manchester, and during one particular bad blitz in our area, a friend of my parents called Harry Sharples was a policeman stationed at Henrietta Street Police Station. Whilst on duty one night bombs were dropping all around and one appeared to drop close to his home a few streets away.
Harry got permission to dash home to see if his wife and new baby were safe. They were! However, on his return to the Police Station half an hour later, he discovered that it had taken a direct hit and all his police colleagues were dead!

Following on from this I have another short story. I was born in Old Trafford in January 1939. On Christmas Eve 1940 we were in the cellar during a particularly heavy air raid. Apparently I wouldn`t stop crying and my parents had bought me a beautiful doll for my second birthday which was to be in January 1941.
My father told my mother to let me have the doll now as they might not survive until my birthday. I was delighted with it and 63 years later it still has pride of place in my bedroom.

Message 1 - Old Trafford Police Station

Posted on: 13 November 2005 by Irene Sutcliffe

I was staying across the road from the police station when this bomb dropped. We escaped injury because we were in the cellar of the rectory. After the blast, the garden was littered with police files. There were several policemen killed. It was the closest I have come to suffering the same fate. I am going to put a full account of this experience, along with my other wartime memoirs onto this website next week I hope.
