Sheffield is located at the south end of the Pennines. So the Germans couldn't find us. Then just before Christmas 1940 they let the tramcars run. It was a frosty night . Sparks flew at every junction and planes followed the tram routes with incendiary bombs. One of the neighbours went into a pub cellar in Fitzallen Square. A plane crashed on it but there was only one way out. The dreadful smell of burning I still remember now. The next day I saw soldiers digging people out " Its just like pork pie' he said 'Its all jelly'. The people were identified by their door keys.
There was a razor blade manufacturer ( he gave swimming and paddling pools to Sheffield Parks ) . He went down to see if his girl workers were all right. He was killed and the lengths of metal used in the making of the razor blades were festooned all over the tramwires.
Three days later we had another blitz but it didn't get into the national press because they didn't want Germany to know that they had hit us because we made munitions (80,000 houses damaged in two nights although some only had windows broken). After that static water tanks were put anywhere there was a spare piece of land.
