One year my Dad won fifty pounds at Selfridges in London — it was the Christmas raffle. With that he bought a barrel of beer, a carpet, fitted himself, my mother and me out in new clothes, he bought me a train set, and a big doll that stood about 4 foot in height, a radio and food. One of my aunts never forgot it and always told us it was the best Christmas she’d ever had in her life. It was 1940.
