I went to fight in 1945 when I was 17 - old enough to join up. I went off sooner than I thought I would and was sent up to Scotland to join the 51st Highland Division. I was in the infantry, a rifelman. I went to a barracks in Aberdeen and was then sent to Edinburgh where I joined a holding battalion for the 8th Army, then was sent on to France. I served in the European Campaign. We did the Rhine crossing and went down into the Rhur. There were good times and bad times. On one occasion in Holland, we comandeered a lorry load of beer and spirits! We delayed moving on the morning after!
