I was born in June 1939 and so my memories of the war years start around 1944. Everything was rationed including furniture and clothes and it was extremely difficult to buy children's clothes. My parents were in the catering trade at that time and I distinctly remember them having flour delivered direct from the flour mill in large white sacks. My Aunty Vera had the bright idea to turn these sacks into dresses for me. They had short sleeves and a 'V' neck and the edges were bound by blue bias binding. They were very cool and easy to wash. I used to wear these dresses for school on hot days.
Furniture bore the famous utility mark and was cheaply made so that everybody could have at least some basic items like beds, wardrobes,tables and chairs. It was not intended to last very long but in fact when my mother died in 1996 she still had some beds and a complete bedroom suite in good order.
