Guardsman John Slate

Has anybody information on the 5TH BATTALION COLDSTREAM GUARDS.

My Uncle, John Slate Guardsman 2665958 was Killed on the 9th March 1945.

The only factual information i have found is a book called A DISTANT DRUM written by the 5th Battalion Signal/radio Officer.This was available from the Library.

I Belive on this day the 9th March they fought in a town called Menzelen near Xanten which involved a building called Haus Loo held by the Germans.Can anybody confirm this.

All information i find on the iternet conflicts with other information.

I have a trip booked in September to go to his Grave at REICHSWALD FOREST. I will be visiting Wesel,Menzelen,Alpon,Arnhem and other places.

Does anybody have any memories of these places during march 1945.

I have written to the Coldstream Guards (Birdcage Walk) but to no reply.

My father, who unfortunately has now passsed away, was with the Guards Armoured Div. I found the Guards book Second to None very informative.
For you, look up entries on the 4th March and 9th March 1944

I too have tried many times with Wellington Barracks but like you no joy.

Thanks for the reply, i will get a copy of the book you mention,

I am waiting to here from the national Archives regarding my uncle and the Battalion.

It costs 拢10 for an estimate they spend 20mins researching for you .They then give you a price for how long it will take for them to collect the information you need (拢64 pound an hour), or you can go there and view the information for free.

Hello, order the book Second to None through the library as I believe the book is quite expensive. The National Archives looks expensive too. If you know of a way to look up back dated newspaper cuttings, look up The Times dated Friday March 23 1945. It relays the Guards in Action at Wesel.
I might try the National Archives, when I have a spare day.

One thing I would suggest is you go to the National Archives in Kew and have a look at the 5CG War Diary for March - the reference is WO171/5143. This is the diary for 1945. If you ring the Archives they can give you advice. I think you can also ask for the relevant part to be photocopied for a fee.

Recieved the diary for the 5th battalion, No mention of my Uncle but it does give good detail as to where they were fighting on the dates he was killed.

Hello,
My grandfather Stephen Simpson was in the 5th Battalion, he is still alive. I have just added his detailed account under stories they may be of help to you in relation to the places you mention.
How did your trip go in September?

I will try and print your image and ask Grandad if he recognises the picture.
I have some group photos but can't seem to upload them at this time. If you want me to email them to you personally your may recognise your dad/grandad on them. they are of the 5th battalion in Normandy.
