This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Allan Price on behalf of Andy Wright and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

My grandfather told me the story of how he was employed in the defence of our nation. He was in the Home Guard, and the equipment they were given to fight the enemy was so poor that for the whole war he only had a wooden rifle.

He and the rest of the men in his unit were required, when they say enemy planes flying overhead, to run out with their wooden rifles, point them to the sky, and pretent to be shooting shouting BANG BANG BANG!

If the pilots were to look down they would see what they thought were soldiers shooting at them. When the German planes flew back after their mission they all ran out again with their wooden guns, shouting BANG BANG BANG as they pointed them to the sky.

He said they never once managed to bring down a German plane.
