CHILDHOOD RECOLLECTIONS

This is Robert Hill鈥檚 story: it was dictated to Kathy Collard-Berry at the Fernhurst Centre at its D-Day Celebrations on 5 June 2004. The story has been added by Pauline Colcutt (on behalf of the Fernhurst Centre) with permission from the author who understands the terms and conditions of adding his story to the website.

I remember when I was a four year old traveling with my grandmother from Edinburgh to Dundee by train. I remember exclaiming at the Barrage Balloons which were festooned around the Forth Bridge. I had never seen a balloon of any type before.

I have an 88 year old cousin who is a retired Doctor. Just after she qualified from Edinburgh she was posted to a battalion of ATS girls in Essex. These girls were nearly all from the East End of London and got up to all sorts of mischief. A day before the Queen came to take parade of the battalion there was an inspection of all the girls. The girls stripped off for this inspection and my cousin is still deeply ashamed that as she checked the girls she passed a girl who was 8 months pregnant. My cousin is teased about this even now.
