We were battened down in the hold and having presumably crossed the Mediterranean Sea our ship dropped anchor between two islands on the night of 4th-5th March. These were said to have been the Lipari Islands, which are situated off the north-east of Sicily, but I would have thought more likely the Egadi Islands on the western tip of Sicily, unless they were setting up a decoy.
When the anchor was used showers of rust would fall like snow all over us and as we were already laying on the bare iron floor, this did not add to our comfort in any way. We had been issued with a small tin of something like corned beef. They allowed us a couple of minutes on deck each day, but I seem to recall that the fingers were now beginning to become too weak to grip the rungs of the vertical iron ladder, so it had to be done with absolute caution. Having now crossed the Tyrrhenian Sea and just prior to landing at Naples on 7th March, it was said that we had passed the Isle of Capri.
