I am writing on behalf of my step-father, who's father served in the war. He and I would appreciate any infomation from those who knew Stan.
Stan Holmes (or 'Hobbs' for a while, because he had a dodgy nose) served his country doing what he did best. He started off as an engine fitter in Sylith. Here he did his basic training under a man named Case. From the start of the war he was working on Shorts Sunderlands. This lasted until the formation of the legendary 617 Squadron.
Upon the formation of 617, Stan requested a transfer and was immeadiately accepted. He served there until they moved out of Scampton. This includes the period of time in which Operation Chastise was perfomed. People may remember Stan for sneaking out of the base on his motorbike through a hole in the perimeter fence.
When the Squadron left, Stan requested extended leave, got married and then left for Pyreas (a sea port near Athens in Greece) to work on Bristol Beaufighters.
Does this man sound familiar?
