I was ten years old at the outbreak of war and was evacuated to Weston super Mare but came back soon afterwards to East Ham with my older brother to see our Dad, who was home on leave and we stayed on afterwards.
Later on in the War I was working at Manor Park and cycling home one evening I realised I was being followed down the High St by a doodle bug bomb! My instinct was to cycle faster, but then I realised it would be better to stop and let it fly over me.
East Ham was a very noisy place anyway because of the anti-aircraft guns in the area and in the docks.
Lots of doodle bugs came our way and the explosions became a part of everyday life.
