This story was submitted to the People's War site by Allan Price on behalf of John Houston and has been added to the site with his permission. The author understands the site's terms and conditions.

My father, John Sr, was called up when he was 34. He was born in 1905. For most of the war he served as a driver in North Africa, and in June 1942 he was captured when Tibruk fell. He was trasported through Italy to Campo 54 near Rome. Eventually he was moved again to Stalag 49, which was a work camp.

We think he worked in a quarry which was between Leipzig and Dresden. He must have seen the Allied bombers flying over to Dresden.

He told me that when the wind was in a certain direction everyone in his camp could smell the buring bodies at Buchenvald Concentration camp.
