This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Allan Price on behalf of Faye Roy and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

One of my clearest memories of the war was going to the post office in the night with my Aunt Anne. She had a boyfriend in the forces and would go down to post her letters to him, I would go along to keep her company.

It was pitch black at night in those days. All the streetlights were out, and everyone had their blackout curtains closed tight to keep in all the light from the houses.

We were both quite scared walking down to the post office. We would bump into each other and hug each other, and all we had was a small torch just in case of emergencies. It was the only time we ever ventured out at night.
