When I was 5 in 1942 I was evacuated To Mrs Pindar in Nottingham. prior to that I lived with my family in Brixton in London butI was evacuated because of the intensity of the bombing. I can remember the evacuation because there I was on Waterloo Station with a big label on my coat and my gas mask around my neck.
I had been scared of the doodlebugs in London and even when a plane came over Nottingham I tried to hide under bushes.
I can remember my father coming home and meeting me at the school.He was in uniform and the other children were around him.
In London the Barrage Balloons were terifying to me. We did have a shelter down the garden but we kept a goose in that, fattening him up for Christmas, so we sheltered under a table which had a whistle attached to one leg. If we got blitzed we could blow the whistle and rescuers would find us.
I vividlyremember doodlebugs, ration books and members of the family that became victims of war.
