During the war there many raids on Ipswich. One struck houses near where I lived, round where Sproughton Road links with the Bramford Road. Bombs and incendiary devices didn't always go off, and when they were found they were exploded or simply dumped in the old ballast pit near the bottom of the Bramford Road.

We often ended up in the Communal Shelter at Church Green Hall.

One mid-day, caught too far from our own shelter, I had to go there because of a raid. A German bomber was hit overhead and could be seen on fire. Before it crashed five of its crew bailed out. A crowd of women were waiting for them as they landed, wanting to lynch them. The authorities soon arrived, and found that one had a Lugar pistol, before taking them away.
