While serving in the Gambia in 1941 a soldier, Corporal Berry, fell ill with Blackwater Fever. This was a disease which at that time was almost always fatal. The only treatments given were blood transfusions direct from donor to patient.
I gave a pint of my blood on Monday, 14th October 1941. Sadly he died that night and I attended his funeral the following day.
I photographed his grave in the Military Cemetery when I returned to The Gambia on holiday in November 1991
