My name is Tom Mathews, and I was 20 years old when the war started. We all had to go away and fight. My job was to supply the guns. This I did by driving a 3 ton Bedford truck.
May 1943 we landed in North Africa, and then on to the Salerno Beaches. It was just carnage, bodies everywhere. It was an awful sight. In September of that year we landed in Italy, Monte Casino.
It was not until 1946 that we were demobbed.
I would like to go into more detail, but some experiences I don鈥檛 care to remember as they bring back too many painful memories.
It was a lovely feeling when the war was finally over. Everyone was singing and dancing in the streets.
