I was born on Derby Road, Burton on Trent. Miss Coles' shop was on the corner of Derby Road and Eaton Road. I was about four or five.

I used to stand outside the shop watching the lorries that were going south on the old A38, which is not there anymore. There were tanks, motorbikes, everything going by. They used to throw small tins of chewing gum to me, not used chewing gum obviously, otherwise I would have thrown it back!! This was towards the end of the war. It happened quite often, though I wouldn't tell anyone else!

My father, George, drove the trains to London during the war. My mother, Gladys, looked after my brother Derek, my sister Hazel and myself. She was a busy lady. There were no automatic washng machines in those days!

We had some young germans come across after the war. One girl lived next door but one, we were friends. They had had such a bad time during the war, I think that's why they were here.

There was an air raid shelter across the road. We never did have to use it. But we played in there after the war. I had a fantastic childhood.
