Wartime Wireless
My mother was crying,
Listening to the radio,
A man in a camp,
Found a bag of crusts,
Hurried to his hut
To devour his frugal feast.
Driven by insatiable hunger,
Fellow prisoners pushed and grabbed
鈥楾il not a crumb was left.
And on the ground, his bare skull broken
Lay the bread benefactor,
Dead in the crumb crush.
Later.
My mother greeted us,
鈥淚t鈥檚 all over.鈥
鈥淲ill there still be 鈥楾he News鈥
Now the war is over?鈥
A child鈥檚 understanding of news
Caused amusement,
My mother was laughing.
