Fifty five years ago this week,
Little boats sailed from the creeks,
through canals, down the rivers,
to brave the Channel's mighty rollers.
Engines chugging, spluttering, straining
across to France, the lads are waiting.
Soldiers lying in the sand dunes,
hiding from the enemy fighters,
crouching as they scream towards them,
machine guns rattling spewing bedlam.
Patiently the men are waiting,
praying for a miracle to happen.
Little boats of every size,
bringing hope to the armies' eyes.
Yachts,launches, ferry boats,
Barges, ketches, anything that floats
Gathers up the ragged army
and turns defeat to a glorious victory.
Our little ships, a heroic fleet.
Fify five years ago this week.
