In March 1942, aged 15, I joined the Merchant Navy and was on my way to the West Indies before my family knew anything about it.

I was a cabin boy on the 鈥淏urn Kinnaird鈥. Later, 1943, this ship sank with all hands. Meanwhile, my father sent me to work in an office. I was bored by this and, in July 1943, I went to Kirkcaldy and volunteered for the Army. I was wounded at Goch on the Dutch/German border and returned to Dreghorn barracks. I signed on for the regular service and went to India with the Royal Scots 1st Battalion and then with the KOSB to Palestine in September 1948.
