My sisters, young brother and myself were in the air raid shelter with our mother, in the back garden. There was an bad air raid going on. We had beds, food and electric light in there. All of a sudden we heard bombs dropping. They whistled as they came down, it was really scary. Then the light went out, but we had torches to use. We were all crying and scared but our Mum said, don't worry as Dad knows we are here. He was on air raid duty. After a while the door opened and Dad was there. We were all happy to see him, as he was to see us safe. We had another surprise as our Mum had had our baby sister when all this happened. She had to go to hospital for a while. My older sisters looked after us. I remember walking along and the shops and houses burning. Not long after we came to Burpham in Guildford and had a very happy childhood as our house had been hit and we were homeless.
After the war my Father was given an award for bravery for saving people in the docks.
