My grandfather was in the Irish army during the time of the second world war - although in the Republic it was never referred to as the second world war, just "The Emergency" - pronounced emerGENcy.
Grandad was stationed on Bere Island which is an island off the coast of west Cork. His responsibility was to protect Ireland's neutrality so every night he scanned the Atlantic ocean for German and British submarines.
The family folklore is that he used to allow the German submarines to dock but never the British ones!
