I was 10 years old and in Whipton Isolation Hospital on high ground just outside Exeter. We heard a tremendous bang and rushed to the windows to see what had happened. Below us in the Exe valley was a small plane flying very close to the ground, it's engine screaming. As it flashed past us we could see iron crosses on the wings and the German pilot sitting in the cockpit. Smoke was rising from the centre of Exeter and AA guns started firing. The nurses dragged us children away from the ward windows and made us lie down on the floor under our beds. By this time the Focke Wolf 190 fighter-bomber was well away and streaking back to France.
We found this very exciting and had no realisation of the death and destruction meted out in a few seconds on defenseless civilians.
