I do remember my brothers coming home on leave from the army. I was the youngest in the family and he was bringing me some books but somebody stole his suitcase and he was most disappointed about it all. I’d be 3 or 4 but I still remember it now. I can also remember being carried into the air raid shelter by one of my brothers. I was wrapped in a blanket and it was on Chanterlands Avenue. I think there was a big gun or something there I remember my dad shouting ‘go on Chants get them Chants’ I think may be there was a gun and that was its nickname? Later in the war all my family stayed in Hull but I went with my mum to Ilkley we were the only ones evacuated because I was so young, but my mum was ill when we were there so I went to a nursery.
