I was eleven years old when war broke out, living in Manchester.

I remember we had a Morrison shelter in our kitchen, which occupied the whole room and I hated it! My brothers were in the air force and my mother (she was a widow) and myself used to sleep there every night during the blitz in Manchester.

I remember feeling very frightened as bombs dropped all around us and in the morning seeing the devastation.

Shortly after this I was evacuated to Wilmslow about 8 miles away, with my school. I went to some very elderly people who were quite strict. Eventually I travelled by bus from home.

This story was submitted to the People's War site by volunteer Sue Craig on behalf of Ruth Watts, and has been added to the site with her permission. Ruth fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
