My late husband was evacuated to Ticehurst in Sussex. He and other lads from his school used to chase the buzz bombs on their pushbikes to collect the shrapnel.

As he rode down the drive one day chasing a bomb, a chicken flew out of the hedge and hit the front wheel of his bike. He went striaght over the handlebars and scraped his elbow.

He had a five inch scar for the rest of his life!

The chicken survived and he found its nest in the hedge. He then had a fresh egg every morning for the rest of the time he was there!
