Whilst we were playing at Carnyorth moors on August Bank Holiday 1943 we noticed a bomber on fire and losing height. At first we thought it was a German bomber but it was a Whitley. As boys we waved to the air crew to make them feel better. It missed the hills but it came down on Hayle beach, just inside where it was mined. I read that the air crew were taken to City Hospital in Truro and I understand that one of them was killed in a bombing raid that night but I was never able to actually verify that. The plane, from St Eval was on an anti submarine patrol and it's numbers were YGJ.
