I particularly remembered my Grandma Seward, who was aged 89 and my Aunt Eva who had been killed when a bomb directly hit their home in Freehold Street, Hull. Grandma had been found dead, still in her bed, but burnt. My Aunt had been found under the stairs, as she would never have left her mother on her own. We were told that it had been an oil bomb which had set fire and had also exploded. My Aunt Eva had planned to marry later that same month. Her husband-to-be was a fireman who had been on duty elsewhere when his fianc茅 had been killed. He was heart-broken.
Two coffins arrived at our house draped with Union Jacks, ready for the funeral at the Chanterlands Avenue Cemetery. I was sent off to work as usual. My Aunt Eva鈥檚 fianc茅 asked the family if Eva could be interred in his name and so she was put to rest as Eva Brookes.
On VE Day I was in the Queens Gardens in Hull. There were Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen and civilians singing and dancing and kissing the whole night. Everyone was so happy. I was so proud to live in Hull and always will be. However, the day was tinged with sadness as we all remembered those who had not survived and my happiness was tinged with the sadness of losing two much loved relatives.
