Me, my mother and my baby brother lived in Amhurst Road, Hackney in a large block of flats called Evelyn Court on the ground floor.
People came each night to sleep on the floor in our flat rather than go to the shelter. They would bring with them packets of biscuits or some tea and my mother would make tea for everybody and give them blankets to sleep on the floor.
One night bombs fell directly in between our blocks blowing out many windows but causing no fatalities, leaving only huge craters. In the morning I went out to collect some shrapnel and see if damage had been done to the houses.
On another occasion I was in the flat of my friend Leslie Cohen when we heard a doodlebug overhead. His mother pulled us both into the hall where there were no windows. We cuddled up closely as the rocket鈥檚 engine suddenly stopped and held our breath waiting for the explosion. Luckily for us it missed our flats but destroyed a house in Rectory Road.
