The war started the day after my brothers 2nd birthday (3rd Sept). I was 4 (born 1935).

I had chicken pox when I went to school. In 1941 when I was in my Mother's bed I sat piping my pox.

My father was in the ARP - the ARP station was bombed, but they were out on another job.

We had my cousin up from Colchester as an evacuees - my Mother gave them tripe and onions for tea. They looked at it and didnt know what it was!

VJ day party in the street, everything had to be red, white and blue. My Mother made a blue blacmange. The cinema let everyone in for free.

If you didnt have anyone under 5 at home you had to work, Mum did bookeeping until my brother was born. The only time I saw a banana was through my brother because he had a green ration book.
