When I was in the ATS during the war one of my postings was in Hull.
Hull was badly bombed during the war and they used to say that if a bomb was meant for you you would never hear it coming. There was one particularly bad night with a lot of shrapnel flying about and we were really worried. My friend and I sheltered at the far side of a cemetery and we were talking about how we鈥檇 be identified if we were hit. The only identification mark on my body was a mole on my left leg and we joked that if we were blown up at least my left leg would be identified and would have a decent buriel! You had to keep good humour and we tried to do this all the time to keep everyone鈥檚 spirits up.
