I joined the Navy in 1942. I remember when I heard the war was over. I was in the Pacific at the time on a big ship HMS Tyne, which was a sub and destroyer depot ship. I recall coming off duty at 6am, and one of the lads shaking my hammock quite violently not long after I had finally gotten to sleep. Now I could not repeat what I said to the chap! It wasn鈥檛 long before I realised I had been woken because the end of the war had been announced. Now I jumped out of my hammock and rushed up on deck. At 10am King George 6th made a formal announcement that the war was over, and to celebrate we were all given two tots of rum each. Of course i didn't hold a grudge towards the chap who had woken me up!
