London Salvage Corps Station, Watling Street, London, 1940
The photograph above was taken early in 1940 outside the old London Salvage Corps Station in Watling Street. The people pictured are a mixture of Salvage Corps, LFB and AFS. I am second from the left. At the time I was a messenger, although I went on to become a Fireman.
At 10pm on 30th September 1940, I was standing in appproxmately the same spot, supposedly on guard. I popped back indoors to use the toilet. I was on my way back when a bomb landed just where I'd been standing, but I only got the blast. I'm now in my 66th bonus year. I left the AFS at the end of of 1942 to join the RAF. I am a member of the Torbay Air Gunners and the Torbay Air Crew Associations."
