I remember the night of the first flying bomb. You could hear the engine, I could hear it coming, and then it stopped. I heard the bang later.
The next day was Derby Day, we could hear the flying bomb over the microphone, and realised it had stopped. Then the door blew in and blew me across the room. There were 17 people killed that day.
I had been evacuated to Plymouth. We used to go down the cliffs and along the shore picking stuff up from shipwrecks, such as oranges, little packets of coffee, tea and milk. We had not tasted coffee before. We picked up lifebelts.
We went back to the London outskirts and we could see all London on fire some nights.
