I lived in the Welsh Valleys during the war and in the village we had a lot of chapels the church of Wales and the catholic church which served a big catchment area. Lord Haw Haw was british but he broadcast propagander for the Germans. One night when he was giving his broadcast he mentioned the catholic church because it was a landmark in the village and said the Germans were going to bomb it. The church was white and so the priest and all ablebodied people in the village turned out and between them painted the church black and it stayed like that for the duration of the war. It is now still white.
