As told to Sarah, aged 7:
Well, this particular day was during the school holidays. My mother worked for the Fire Service during the war, so I was looked after by my auntie. I had to walk to her house on my own. On the way I heard a Doodlebug coming. I continued walking when suddenly the engine stopped. I looked up and noticed how low it was, not much higher than the tops of the houses. I knew that I was in danger and would have to take cover. There was an uneasy silence but I decided to run as fast as I could towards my auntie's house. As I turned the corner into her road, she was standing at her front gate urging me to run faster, but I was already running as fast as I could. My legs just couldn't go any quicker. I finally reached her house, we again ran quickly to the shelter in the garden. She pushed me down into the shelter where another auntie was waiting and she covered me with a pillow. The Doodlebug fell a short distance away but I was safe.
