I did a flight mechanics course at RAF Locking which I hated, because it was very difficult. I had been a hairdresser. They gave me a list of trades to choose from and I chose it because flight mechanics were allowed to fly which I enjoyed very much afterwards.
After I passed my course I was sent to RAF Colerne in Wiltshire where life was much more fun. The girls were allowed to go up so we could understand how important (nuts and bolts) everything was. We did alot of varied jobs ( I belonged to communications) but it did give lots of flights to Northholt (which was near my home).
I was at Colerne when a squadron of metreors arrived, these being the first jets I had seen. They arrived in perfect glory in formation - it was a wonderful sight.
