At the beginning of the war, we received an Anderson shelter to erect in our back garden. We dug out a good deep hole for it, and my father erected it with some "help" from us boys. Once it was all secure, we filled in the surrounding ditch and applied the final touches. We then decided it would be a good idea if we put grass sods on the top of it so the bombers wouldn't spot it. We naively believed that the Germans would then bomb next doors shelter because they hadn't bothered with the camouflage.
