I spent the war years in Derby. i remember going to the Co-op in Sunnyhill and collecting shrapnel. One night I went to the Blue Pool pub with my husband and got chatting to two soldiers there. I thought they were Polish or something but they turned out to be Welsh! They were billeted in Sunnyhill. We invited them for tea the next night and they ended up becoming good friends. one practically lived at our house. We were in touch until he died a few years ago. I ended up working in the office at the Ordinance Depot. Every friday we had gas mask practise when we had to wear our gas masks for about an hour. My husband was in the Home Guard.
