This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Anastasia Travers a volunteer with WM CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Joye Beckett and has been added to the site with his permission. Joye Beckett fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

I lived in Market Weighton near Hull when I joined the WRENS in 1943. I was sent to Mill Hill in London for Basic Training then to the HMS Aeriel at Warrington where I trained in Radio Engineering. I was then sent to RNAS Duneeno and worked on radios in aircraft.

I saw burn victims from shot down planes — goggle masks on their faces. On my 23rd Birthday I was at home at a party. It was a big celebration and I wore a new suit and I fell down in a cow patty!
