Dad kept hens, and the people in the end house had a pig. Several people, including us, gave money, and could then have some of the meat when the pig was killed. All the children loved the pig. One day when we came home, one of the boys screamed - I've never heard such a scream - the pig was gone! All the children were sad: we went down to see where the pig had been "They took our pig!" we mourned.
The pig bins were reguarly searched by men who used to eat out of them! One tall, white-haired man was in rags, but spoke with an Oxford accent - Mum used to give him a sandwich. He always thanked her politely. He disappeared: Mum worried about him, but Dad said he had probably just moved on.
Once, Mum got some horse meat - it wasn't too bad, but "This is very tough, Elsie, - very tough" said Father. "It's horse meat" Mum said. Dad got really angry ; "Never give me horse meat again!" he said - he loved horses.
Di Mascio's - Di Di's - used to make ice cream when they could get the ingredients. Somehow word would get round on the grapevine - "Di Di's are making ice cream!" and all the children would rush to queue - for a long time - for the one cornet per child they were allowed.
Any greaseproof paper round food had to be thoroughly scraped, and tea and sugar bags were returned to the Co-op to be used again .
As I was small, with blonde hair and big green eyes, the street gang used to send me to ak the G.Is. "Got any gum, chum?" I was never refused. But I never tasted any of the chewing gum, as the big kids said I was too little and might choke on it!
