This story was given by Denis Kingham about his father Eric. It’s based in Kings Heath in Birmingham. Mr Kingham gave his story to a People's war volunteer and understands our terms and conditions.
We think my father had a guardian angel. There were lots of moments when something happened to others around him but he always survived. He joined up when he was 17 , under age and worked as a mechanic in the RAF throughout the war. Once he was at a camp and there were some kids hanging around who he thought were orphans. He was on his way to the dock side to sail somewhere and one of the little boys followed him to the dockside. His officer made him take the little boy back to the camp perimeter and he didn’t sail and the boat was torpedoed - he escaped because he wasn’t on the boat. Another time he was supposed to be on a plane but was given last minute leave — the plane was shot down. Another time he was embedded in a fox hole (they used to call them) but was called out of his position to go somewhere else and the tent was hit and his friends were killed.
