My main recollections are as a child in Sinfin. We had concreted roads and pavements which because of the wartime blackout were covered over by tar and chippings. As a result of which most children of that era have bits missing from their legs and knees through falling down on them. But accompaning these were what were called smoke screens, metal containers with a chimney and a flat lid on top into which oily rags were placed and burnt, and created a smoke screen which I believe helped Derby to be protected from the air.
Because being in the valley and covered in cloud from these screens and also all the factories plethering out from their foundries, The Railway, Royces and Qualcast and such like.
The place got covered over and are the main reasons why we did not suffer air raids.
Plus the fact that we had barrage balloons all over the place. I attended Sinfin school in Sheridan Street and we had one parked right by the school grounds. Saw it struck by lightning on occasions and burnt down and various things like that. All in all that's why we did not suffer greatly from attacks from the air.
