A night in 1940 when incendiary bombs were dropped in Sevenoaks, one landed on the balcony of the house opposite in Granville Road and my father, a voluntary warden went across and put it out, or rather, kicked it off the balcony.
I was about 10 at the time and regretted having missed the fun, but the next day I found an unexploded bomb in our garden.
I got out the styrup pump and bucket of sand and threw the bomb against the garden roller hoping to set it off so I could put it out.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I couldn't set it off, so I had to take it in a bucket to the Police Station. To add insult to injury, I heard the next day of a neighbour who had also found an unexploded bomb in his garden but he took it to the firestation. Here, the incendiary element was removed and he given back the casing which he could keep as a souvenir.
