My husband worked at Rolls Royce. It was a reserved occupation so I was fortunate that he didn't have to go and fight. He'd just come of nights when the bomb dropped on the factory.

I remember the street shelter - it was awful. In the end we used the cellar instead. I also remember rationing - it wasn't easy. We'd have to queue at Birds for bread and of course the Co-op was popular then. You could turn up when you like but there was usually a queue.
You couldn't by tights or stockings so we'd paint our legs with leg paint. It worked but it wasn't very warm!

You couldn't buy furniture so had to make do with utility furniture which was a very basic. We never thought the war would last all those years.
