I am the daughter of Thomas H. Mawson who served as a driver in the army with the 11th Royal Artillary Company,B. Battery and C Troop. His No. was 1110681
Dad wrote out his memories of school, work and war during his 70s, he is now 88. I typed up the story and wondered who would be interested. This Web page seems the ideal place.
He was away from home four and a half years althogether so his story is a long one covering about 6 chapters.
Dad took part in the "Knightsbridge Box", The Battle of El Alamein, the Mareth Line and finally the Victory parade through Tunis in North Africa. During this time he was wounded by shrapnel in his thigh but reported 'Killed in Action' by mistake. He then continued to take part in the Invasion of Sicily and travelled all through Italy and finally had 6 months in Germany
Whilst typing out his story I was made aware that these men were not soldiers by choice, as in a career, but men who were struggling to get a life together and then suddenly being shipped half way round the world into an alien environment and the theatre of war.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has connections with the same Company.
